Beyond the Beaches – Top 5 fun activities

You come to Lanzarote for the beaches — and you absolutely should enjoy them. But if you’re staying a little longer, the island starts revealing layers that many short-term visitors never get to see.

Here are five experiences that, in my opinion, truly define Lanzarote beyond the coastline.

1. Explore the Lunar Landscapes of Timanfaya

A visit to Timanfaya National Park is non-negotiable. The first time you see the lava fields stretching endlessly under a wide blue sky, it barely feels like Europe.

The terrain was shaped by eruptions in the 18th century, and it still looks raw and powerful. Even a short visit leaves a strong impression — it’s the kind of place that makes you pause and just look.

2. Hike to the Top of Caldera Blanca

If you enjoy walking, hike up Caldera Blanca at least once. The trail gradually leads you to the rim of one of the island’s largest volcanic craters.

Standing up there, with panoramic views across Lanzarote and the Atlantic, gives you a sense of scale you don’t get from the road. It’s peaceful, windy, and absolutely worth the effort — especially in the early morning or late afternoon light.

3. Walk the Cliffs of Famara

Famara is known for surfing, but the cliffs above the beach offer one of the most spectacular walks on the island.

The views stretch endlessly, the ocean feels wild below, and there’s a sense of space that’s hard to describe. It’s one of my favorite spots when I need perspective — and a reminder of how untamed Lanzarote still feels.

4. Visit the Jardín de Cactus

Jardín de Cactus, designed by César Manrique, is one of those places that quietly surprises you.

Hundreds of cactus species grow in a restored volcanic quarry, arranged in a way that feels artistic but completely natural. It’s not a long visit — but it captures the island’s balance between design and nature beautifully.

5. Taste Wine in La Geria

Driving through La Geria is an experience on its own. Vines grow in individual pits dug into black volcanic ash, protected from the wind by small stone walls. It looks almost surreal.

Stopping at a local bodega to taste Lanzarote’s Malvasía wine while overlooking those vineyards is something special. You can feel how much effort goes into cultivating grapes in such a harsh environment — and it makes every glass taste even better.

Experience Lanzarote Properly

The beauty of these activities is that they’re easy to combine. You can hike in the morning, swim in the afternoon, and enjoy local wine in the evening — all without long drives or complicated logistics.

And when you’re not rushing through a packed itinerary, you experience the island differently. Staying comfortably with midstay-canary.com gives you that flexibility — the chance to explore Lanzarote at your own rhythm rather than on a tight holiday schedule.

Because here, the real magic often happens between the plans.
